I've only been at UNG for four years, and I have already had countless students come into my office, confess they don't have a clue what to do after graduating, and then break into tears.
On one hand, I am grateful that I offer a welcoming presence for students. And I am thankful for the teachable moments this vulnerability provides.
On the other hand, I am tried of seeing students in this position: staring at graduate and thinking "crap... Now what?"
The Writing and Publication degree is an important one, one critically needed during a time in our country where vicious, rapid, and uninformed dissent stands for reason, where cultural, sexual, racial, ethnic difference is avoided, and fear drives decision making. Our Writing and Publication degree seeks to develop students who can reason through complex issues and state an argument in logical and sustained writing. We don't help students fall into partisan politics, but we offer an opportunity for all students to learn how to communicate effectively, ethically in writing.
But the Writing and Publication degree asks students for a great deal of internal motivation because there are not clearly stated careers waiting upon graduation. A business major goes into business; an education majors goes into education; a botany major becomes a botanist.
What do you become?
This semester, we are going practical. Your mind is not going to explode with new ideas and new ways of thinking about the word. You are not engaging in dense reading and forming an eight page argument.
With the help of guest speakers and the wonderful people at Career Services, we are exploring careers.
We are having career day for 16 weeks.
Let's do something with this degree. Sure, come by my office and vent...but let's get you a job, too.
